Devious Journal Entry

I made a statement about the design update last time, so here it goes, here it goes, here it goes, here it goes again:

First off, the message center. I was expecting a retheming of the message center. I was NOT expecting thumbnails and full comment views to be made available to nonsubscribers! So, yes, that rocks. And lumping journals in with art makes a fair bit more sense than lumping them with comments and favorites, so kudos for making it more than just a cosmetic update.

The home page, however, is ridiculous. It's not even a home page anymore! It's just the main Browse page! I don't know how they managed to get that change approved. Lucky for me I hardly ever use it.

EDIT: I just discovered that the old home page is more or less still available but as the "Channels" page. Who are they getting these titles from? Microsoft circa 1998???

The customizable toolbar is complicated, but at least it's a step up from that retardedly unintuitive drop-down menu with the DA icon -- and even that has changed to a little arrow next to the username, which makes a little more sense.

All in all, I'm more disappointed in what DIDN'T change since v5, which I thought made things take up too much space (I still haven't turned signatures back on, but I don't think I ever will because I have discovered that the world is a much nicer place without them) and put things in unintuitive places. There has to be a better way to lay stuff out so it all fits on small screens but people can still find their way around without any trouble.

Also... is it just me, or is deviantART getting greener and greener with every successive redesign?

This is actually the first redesign I've noticed since getting an account, so I can't say whether it is or isn't getting greener. The main impact this has had on me is the main page, about which I agree with you. Still, it's not like I'm going to stop using DeviantART just because they made an odd change or two. If that were the case, I would've left facebook forever ago, and that certainly isn't the case.

(Oh, and Bravo on the quick review)
I'm mad that I have a paid account for nothing tho...
I hate the new message center set up.. It doesn't have to be.. so cluttered.
That and I have to remove things like 4 times for them to stay gone on my message center. D:

Would the veggie Tales be Carnivores? I think so because if they were herbivores and ate vegetables that would be cannibalism.

So yes, they are either cannibals or carnivores and either way you should now run from the evil broccoli.
I'd've preferred to keep it showing more than three deviations from watched members at a time, but that's a minor trifle. I suppose the current setup does allow for faster loads, which will make a difference on my home computer.

When I first saw dA today, I almost reloaded on the assumption that there was a formatting error. My inclination was to join the minority chorus of gripers. But I didn't, because I've learned by now that changes I hate at first often turn out for the better.

I had a comment here, but something went wrong when I submitted it. So, since I don't want to type it all again, you get the short version: I don't like the new message center at all.
Don't worry. With all the extra ads they've been splattering all over the site in the past few months, you're still getting your money's worth.

And it's odd about the message center not deleting things. It's doing a better job of keeping them gone for me than the old one did. So, yeah, no idea what's up with that.

It does seem to be getting greener and bulkier. So, basically, their design team's run by The Incredible Hulk.

I actually dislike the thumbnail previews - I very much prefer a simple list. Much easier to manage. I just wish they'd give an option to choose to use a previous layout version. All this Web 2.0 stuff seems to inevitably cause more problems than it solves.
Heck, sometimes I wish I could go back to v4! Problem with that is that they've made some pretty fundamental changes and added a lot of features since v5 came out, so integrating those into it would be a bigger challenge than anyone would want.

Also, the Hulk joke = win.

I think dA's layout is like The Incredible Hulk in reverse. Every time they update it, it gets greener and bulkier, and then we get mad!
